Description

In 1944 ontwierp North American Aviation een dagjager die was voorzien van pijlvleugels. Dit toestel kon ook worden ingezet als escortejager of duikbommenwerper. De 2 XP-86 prototypes waren eind 1944 al gereed maar werden pas na WOII geperfectioneerd en afgebouwd nadat diverse op de Duitsers buitgemaakte technologische vindingen in de toestellen waren verwerkt.

Nederland heeft tussen 1955 en 1964 met 63 van deze machines gevlogen.
