English: Press photograph in Transylvania's Cosânzeana review. Original caption: "The new caliph: Abdul Medjid, with daughter Princess Durri Chehvâr Sultana. The flight of Sultan Mehmed has allowed the Angora parliament to vote in a new caliph, with the goal of guarding over Islam. The selection fell on Abdul Medjid, a cousin of former Sultan Mehmed VI. The present Caliph's father was Sultan Abdul Aziz, killed in 1876. The new Caliph is a man with a vast culture, at age 54. He enjoys great sympathy in Turkey and was elected caliph with virtualy the totality of ballots. He is a great friend of France. His daughter, Princess Durri Chehvâr Sultana (Sovereign Pearl) is merely 13 years of age [sic], this being the reason why she can be seen without a veil. The Koran does not impose the veil at this age." |
