Description
Deutsch: North American P-51C-5-NT Mustang (s/n 42-103437), Italien, 1944.
Siehe: Italienfeldzug (Zweiter Weltkrieg).
English: North American P-51C-5-NT Mustang (s/n 42-103437), Italy, 1944. The following inscription can be recognised at the front, below the cockpit, which could not be conclusively identified:

PILOT- LT.N.M. HARRISS - C/C- SGT.T.F. SUAREZ - U.S.ARMY P-51C-5-N - SERIAL AF42-103437 -

In the presumed emergency landing (belly landing) of this P-51C-5, the rear fuselage and tail segment was broken off, the associated USAAF Fighter Group is (still) unknown. The cornfield had grown up around the aircraft wreckage at the time the photo was taken. No drag marks are visible, so the emergency landing was probably made one or two months earlier. The pilot was able to escape from the aircraft on the ground, possibly slightly injured. The names of the two German Luftwaffe (senior) sergeants with "khaki uniforms" are not known. Presumably they were not flying personnel, but members of a command or squadron staff. The (senior) sergeant on the left was obviously awarded the EK II on the day the photo was taken, which was only worn openly on that day. The photo was probably taken in central Italy in July/August 1944. See: Italian Campaign (Second World War).
