Description harvestfish, Peprilus paru (alepidotus), 49mm SL. Manokin River, Somerset County, MD - 5/28/12. Photo by Robert Aguilar, Smithsonian Environmental Research Center. This species is synonymized with P. alepidotus according to WORMS and ITIS. Historically, this species has been classified as P. alepidotus in the mid-Atlantic. P. paru ranges from the northeastern US to southern South America and there appears to be genetic differences among the disparate subpopulations. Further investigation into possible species level differences is warranted.
