Pholiota abietis A.H. Sm. & Hesler

Image location: Horse Mountain, Humboldt Co., California, USA

as for the scales on the stipe, (lucky i have a few specimen in front of me) the scales start off very pale, as they go down the stipe they get a bit thicker and slightly darker, although I wasn’t able to get all the way down to the base without ripping the side off the fir snag
