V, OF SHROPSHIRE. 85 houses: it is a place of no importance in itself, but the elegance of the iron bridge whichhere crosses the Severn, and the picturesque ruins of an abbey, situated on its southernbank, in a rich pastoral valley, deserve to be noticed. The bridge was constructed atCoalbrook Dale, and is on the Schaffhausen principle, the outer ribs rising to the top ofthe railing, and being connected with the lower ones by means of dove-tailed king-posts. The abbey church is a fine cruciform building: the centre of the cross is surmountedby a massive tower, and the whole of the interior is highly ornamented with carved work.These magnificent remains present, with their ivy-mantled walls, noble pillars and arches,darkened as they are by their narrow windows, a gloomy contrast when compared with thelively verdure surrounding them, backed by rich woody banks.
