The Romanian oil industry was first developed in 1857, The oil museum was founded on the 100th anniversary in 1957. This, however is the Museul Ceasului Nicolae Simache The building dates from 1910 ( or late 19th century depending on source) . The museum was opened in the Palace of Culture in 1963 and in 1994 was named after the founded and first director, Prof. Nicolae Simache.
