About 30.000 912 coupés and 2.500 912 Targas were built over five (5) years, not counting the U.S. only 912E from 1976.

Although otherwise identical to the contemporary 911, the 912 was introduced as a replacement of the less powerful 356 SC that was discontinued in 1965, using the 356's engine.
