Description
Porcelain bowl decorated in overglaze enamels. Qing dynasty, first half of 19th centuryThis bowl is an example of Bencharong (“five coloured”) ware, destined for the Thai market. Bencharong was made initially for the Siamese royal court towards the end of the 18th century. Its vibrant colours embraced red, yellow, black, white and turquoise green enamels, while pink, purple, blue and orange were later added to the palette. Specific religious motifs were sent to Jingdezhen from Thailand. This vessel bears panels containing worshipping Thepanom, (Buddhist celestial beings, wearing crowns and body jewellery) and Norasingh (mythical semi-deities who live in the Himmapan Forest, having human head and torso, hindquarters of a lion, and tail and hoofs of a deer). The legendary Forest is said to lie in the Himalayas, below the Buddhist heavens and invisible to humans, who can never approach or enter. Flames and jewels adorn the background of the bowl, and the inside is turquoise green.
