The photograph is undated, but probably from 1868.
The photograph has been removed from the origanal wooden frame. This wooden frame bears a carved inscription: above (in Arabic): \"Salma bint Sultan Sa\'id\", below (in Latin script): \"ER\" [= Emily] Ruete]. On the reverse side of the frame contains a slip of paper with the inscription \"Gleiches Bild (1927) im Besitz von Saleh-bin-Ali, Zanzibar (nach Ingrams)\". (An identical picture in the possession of Salih bin \'Ali, Zanzibar (according to Ingrams]). \'Ingrams\' reverse to W.H. Ingrams \"Chronology and Genealogies of Zanzibar Relers\', Zanziber 1926. Salih bin \'Ali is the Hirth leader who was was expelled from Zanzibar for his role of Barghash bin Sa\'id\'s rebellion against Sultan Majid bin Sa\'id.
Originally donated as part of the Collection Emily Ruete, born as Sayyida Salma bint Sa’id Sultan (1844–1924), Princess of Oman and Zanzibar, and her son Rudolph Said-Ruete (1869–1946) in 1937 to the Oosters(ch) Instituut, Leiden, who transferred its ownership to Leiden University Library on 6 November 1996. The bulk of the Said-Ruete collection, consisting of printed books with annotations or inserted cuttings, remains the property of the Oosters Instituut and is presently on permanent loan to the Netherlands Institute of the Near East (NINO).
