I think it was on my first trip to Finland that I went to Malmi. Then in August 2009 I went to an airshow there.

Happy memories. It was for a decade or so Helsinki's sole and primary airport having a location I believe advised on by Charles Lindbergh.

The advent of bigger aircraft and Helsinki's hosting of the Olympics in 1952 meant that the runways needed both extending and strengthening. That needed time and money, and both were in short supply. Hence, a new airfield was opened that became Helsinki Vantaa.

In turn most of the air traffic moved there, leaving Malmi as a facility for what's known as General Aviation - your private planes.

Pilots loved it, but guess who loved it more? Developers. Developers LOVE airfields. They're huge, they're flat, they're already cleared and they're dead easy to build on.

Malmi has been threatened with closure and development for decades and now the battle is lost. I went there today and it was just sad. It is at least still an airfield but the bulldozers are already there. If I go back in ten years when it's 25,000 new apartments I will at least be able to say "I remember when all this was fields".
