Description

Quiahuiztlan, tombs and the Laguna de El Viejón and the Gulf of Mexico in the background

Quiahuiztlan is an archaeological zone and ancient totonaca city in the State of Veracruz, Mexico. The name is of Nahuatl origin and means "the place of the rain".

The site is located near the Hill of the Metates (also referred to as Cerro Bernal), so called because many small grinding stones (metates) were found buried there. It is located near the coastal town of Villa Rica.

This area had three functions. It was a city of about 16,000 inhabitants. It had a cemetery where the remains of 78 tombs were arranged in three main areas. And it was a fortress, as evidenced in the foothills of the hill by defensive walls of various dimensions.

Whereas Quiahuiztlan is famous for its cemeteries and is sometimes called a "Totonac cemetery", it was also a city with squares, terraces, stairways, walls, ballcourts, etc. The Quiahuiztlan tombs follow the same pattern. They look like miniature talud-tablero temples with a very short flight of stairs ascending to a tiny one-room sanctuary on top. The bones of the person in the tomb consisting of usually only the skull and the long bones of the arms and legs, were buried inside the base of the temple.
