Description
English: The red river hog is a wild member of the pig family. They live in groups, or ‘sounders’ of 4-20 animals, comprising of a male (boar), some adult sows and their piglets, in the forests and scrub regions and close to rivers in sub-Saharan Africa. They are also known to congregate around villages and to prey on domestic fowl. They have striking red fur with a long white crest of hair running down their back, and tassels of hair on elongated pointed ears. Mostly nocturnal, by day they hide in dense bushes and after sunset they roam around in groups, searching for food. They like to wallow in muddy ponds and streams, are good swimmers and swift runners.
