Nach dem großen Brand in Rom ließ sich Nero südlich des Hügels Esquilin eine Palastanlage bauen, die Domus Aurea. Nach seinem Tod wurde das Gebiet den Römer wieder zurück gegeben und Vespasian begann dort mit der Errichtung eines steinernen Amphitheater. Finanziert wurde das mit dem geplünderten Goldschatz aus dem Tempel von Jerusalem während des jüdischen Krieges. Eröffnet wurde das Kolloseum im Jahre 80 durch den Sohn Vespasians Titus mit 100 tägigen Spielen, bei denen annähernd 5000 Tiere getötet wurden. Der ursprüngliche Name des Theaters war "Amphitheatrum Flavium". So genannt nach der flavischen Dynastie aus der Titus und Vespasian stammten. Der Name Kolloseum stammt von der übergroßen Statur Kaiser Neros, die direkt vor dem Theater stand. (Kolossos). In diesem Theater starben in der Folgezeit möglicherweise zwischen 300000 und 500000 Menschen und mehrere Millionen Tiere. JHP |
