Description

I visited San Diego last week with my family and one of the stops was the Old Point Loma Lighthouse in the Point Cabrillo National Monument. This lighthouse was retired in 1891 as it was determined that it was situated too high to be useful. When it was cloudy or foggy, the lighthouse was often ABOVE the fog or clouds and unable to be seen from the water.

When it was discontinued, the fresnel lens was removed. Eventually it was turned into a museum and restored to how it appeared during the time it was in service. It was re-equipped with the fresnel lens from the Mile Rocks Lighthouse near San Francisco. In addition, the assistant keeper’s quarters were turned into a nice museum of lighthouse technology.

The view from this spot is spectacular and if you have never visited here, it is totally worth the $5 charge to get into the area.
