Description
English: Serandite
Locality: Poudrette quarry (Demix quarry; Uni-Mix quarry; Desourdy quarry; Carrière Mont Saint-Hilaire; MSH), Mont Saint-Hilaire, La Vallée-du-Richelieu RCM, Montérégie, Québec, Canada
The “rosette” spans ~ 1⅓ - 1½ mm. MOB coll.
Updated with new EDS results. This is part of the ashcroftine specimen shown in File:Ashcroftine-(Y)-257734.jpg. Thus it is from igneous breccia, which means that, despite the color, this should not be sérandite. However EDS (child "photo") shows only Si, Mn and Ca (with Mn apparently >> Ca). According to the analyst, the relative heights of the peaks do NOT correspond to relative abundances in this scan. But taking it literally, it would suggest rhodonite/pyroxmangite - both of which are highly unlikely for MSH. If, however, one assumes that Na was somehow missed, then it would appear that this is a Ca rich sérandite - despite sérandite not having been previously reported from igneous breccia at MSH. I'm going with sérandite until proven otherwise.
A new scan (May 2013) with a better sample does match a known sample of serandite. But the peaks are barely evident. I expect to get improved scans in a couple of months.
Assuming that it really is sérandite, the habit is also interesting. While tabular sérandite certainly occurs, and some even has a squarish/rectangular shape, e.g. the specimen on the cover of the Min Rec MSH special issue (Horváth et al, July-August 1990), such crystals are obviously contact twins of the form shown in diagram F on p. 335 of the same issue. The xls on this specimen are clearly not twins (at least not of that type).
However, the xls do resemble [1] which I believe is from the same find as [2] (Arnaldo Brunetti), and which apparently WAS determined to be sérandite. EDS also suggests sérandite - although once again Na is missing. Since the xls are very small and not too sharply formed, the morphology will be much clearer in stereo.
