Description STM images of two types of second-layer silicene. (a) STM image of second-layer √3 × √3-α silicene which appeared at θSi = 1.2 ML during growth at 570 K. The image size is 16 × 16 nm. Vs = −2.0 V, I = 0.1 nA. (b) Magnified image of the √3 × √3-α silicene in (a). The image size is 8 × 8 nm2. Vs = −2.0 V, I = 0.1 nA. The inset shows an image of the √3 × √3-α silicene taken at Vs = +2.0 V, I = 0.1 nA. (c) STM image of the second-layer √3 × √3-β silicene at 620 K, which appeared at θSi = 2.0 ML. The image size is 16 × 16 nm. Vs = +2.0 V, I = 0.1 nA. (d) Magnified image of √3 × √3-β silicene in (c). Vs = −2.0 V, I = 0.1 nA. The image size is 8 × 8 nm2. The black arrows indicate the Ag[1-10] direction.
