It carried the sleigh, but the ice was so thin that it bent with the weight and as we passed, water welled up behind the sleigh, from cracks. We were mighty lucky that time. Going in would have been disasterous.

Then came Jackfish Point – the Northerly end of the Buffalo Reserve, where roughly 1000 head of Wood Bison roamed.

We had hoped to go overland from this point to Fort Smith but our supplies were done and we had no choice but to go to Fort Chipewyan, to replenish our larder.

Taking a portage known as the Quatre Fourches cut off, we spent the last night on the trail with two Trappers, one of whom was called Elliott.
