| Description | I met this big, lovable native bee as he buzzed & tumbled among Bidens alba blossoms on Munyon Island, in the strange weedy little meadow where the old Hotel Hygeia used to be. This is the male of the highly sexually dimorphic species. The females are a beautiful shiny purple-black color. Carpenter bees bore into wood to make their nexts. They are important and efficient pollinators of open faced flowers. The male does not sting but is aggressive at defending his territory. |
