Description

St Michael's Mount, Cornwall, a hand-coloured lithograph by Thomas Ashburton Picken (1818–1891), after R.T. Penrith. R.T. Penrith is an unidentified artist, and it may be a person with the initials R.T. who came from Penrith.

Note the gaff cutter sea-going fishing trawler behind the paddle steamers. They had a 50-foot hull, well overhung at each end by sail, and they could go fast. The sails are white, unlike the east-coast fishing trawlers which had brown sails (treated with cutch) and thicker masts. At this period they were about to be overtaken in the fishing industry by the 80-ft loa gaff ketches, but some were kept for tasks which required speed. This drawing does not do justice to the stern shape - they had beautiful, delicate countersterns.
