One of the first applications of radio was on board ships, to keep in touch with the mother country and call for rescue if they were sinking. The device on the desk is a spark-gap radio transmitter. On the left side is the tuned circuit and spark gap, consisting of 4 Leyden jars and a coil of wire. The boxes on the right side are induction coils providing the high voltage to power the transmitter. In the center is the receiving equipment.
