Summary edit

Description
English: Detail on the gatehouse Ex Luce Lucellum. Robert Lowe, British and later Australian politician suggested a tax on a box of lucifer matches in 1871 for which he suggested the latin motto Ex luce lucellum , out of light a little profit. He was the chancellor of the exchequer between 1868 and 1871. It caused a furore, and a hasty retreat, followed by his resignation. This relief is thus a jibe from the manufacturer of matches Bryant & May.
Ex luce lucellum

We all of us know, But if Lucy can't sell 'em, How then, Mr. Lowe ?

The success of the campaign against the match tax resulted in the erection of the now disappeared (1953) drinking fountain in Bow Road in 1872 as documented here
