Summary
editDescriptionThe Emperor's Old Clothes (33649469685).jpg |
A model for one of the entries for a temporary sculpture for the Fourth Plinth in Trafalgar Square. Here the Hans Christian Andersen story gets a new twist. Andersen's emperor was naked. Raqs Media Collective give him a new life searching for new clothes in Delhi. His old robes are left behind "as a ghost of the past and a warning for the future". The pale ghostliness of the white fibreglass model is emphasised by the transparent box. Looking into and through it, the camera makes many of the people in the gallery seem a little washed-out and insubstantial The Emperor's Old Clothes was shortlisted but not picked to go on the Fourth Plinth in 2018. This was selected . _____________________ By coincidence, on the same day I walked past another sculpture where empty clothes 'stood in' for important people who have mostly gone but should be remembered. ___________________________________ § Art critic Mark Hudson reviewed the shortlist on 19 January 2017. § Harr-Joht Kaur Takhur gives her impressions of 'The Emperor's Old Clothes' sculpture in a National Gallery video. § In Odense - Hans Christian Andersen's birthplace - there's another naked Emperor by sculptor Keld Moseholm. § The sculpture on Visit Denmark website. |
