Summary
editDescriptionThe Swedish Lion Monument.jpg |
The Swedish Lion Monument, known as the Rootsi Lõvi in Estonian, is located on the westernmost spot in Narva, overlooking the Narva River that separates Estonia from its powerful neighbor Russia. The Ivangorod fortress, on the Russian side of the river, can be seen in the distance. The Swedish Lion Monument is a memorial to those who perished in the battle of Narva between the armies of the Swedish King Carl XII and the Russian Czar Peter I on November 19, 1700. The original monument was erected in 1936, but it only lasted eight years before being utterly destroyed in 1944 by a Soviet bombardment of Narva. The replica found here today was financed by Sweden and unveiled on November 18, 2000, just in time for the 300th anniversary of the battle. |
