English: The former HO Hotel Zur Post, Wernigerode. Oct 1995
The missing letters HO of the former GDR HandelsOrganisation have been removed from the building. In this very hotel, I spent a week in April/May 1990 during GDR times, booked through Berolina Travel in Conduit Street London W1, the GDR's travel bureau. The proprietor dealt with Police Visas and issued vouchers for breakfast and evening meals. As he dished out the huge pile of what looked like darkly coloured cinema tickets, he spat on his fingers. All very sleazy. I recall Beck's beer was available then, although I preferred the locally produced Hasserode. A fine establishment. In the upstairs bathroom were secreted some DDR national flags, no longer needed by April 1990.
