Description

Founded in Chemnitz, the sole large Chemical works in that city, in 1881 as H. Th. Boehme, the main factory was built at Chemnitz-Kappel. A sister factory was founded here in Mohsdorf in 1930. Later, amalgamation with the Henkel business of Duesseldorf, it became known as Boehme Fettchemie GmbH. After the war it was known as VEB FEWA Fettchemie Karl-Marx-Stadt until 1991 when the final closure came due to changed economic circumstances. Soaps, washing up liquid, and textile treatments were produced here. FEWA was a revolutionary synthetic detergent invented in Chemnitz by Boehme. The werkbahn or sidings of the factory can be seen branching off in the left foreground. Amazingly, this site was bought a month later in July 1993 by the West German company <a href="#//www.zschimmer-schwarz.com/1-311.History_of_Z&S_Group.html" rel="nofollow">Zschimmer and Schwarz</a> which was interestingly founded in Chemnitz in 1894.
