DescriptionThe top of the Lion Gate.jpg |
English: One of the most imposing structures of all times, the main entrance of the citadel of Mycenae. The approach followed a natural uphill path, leading to a narrow space between the smooth, teep rock on the left and a long, narrow bastion on the right. At the end of this narrow space, at which the aggressors were forced to huddle together, exposed on all sides to the volleys of the guard. As they look up, they would have seen the stone relief of the two lionesses. They flank the central column that represents a goddess. Some archeologist believed that this relief were later used to a coat of arms. Its robust and sufficiently naturalistic style cannot but impress any visitors symbolizing the power and prestige of the palace. |
