Tide ice formations in Brofjorden at Loddebo, Lysekil Municipality, Sweden

Summary edit

Description
English: Tide ice formations by the shore of Brofjorden at Loddebo, Lysekil Municipality, Sweden.

The weather had been cold, calm and clear with no snow for a few days. As the ice settled on the fjord, the tide heaved it up and down. This resulted in tears and cracking in the ice sheet along the shores and upright shards of ice developed around stones and cliffs. The tide in Brofjorden is only about 20 cm (7.9 in), so most of the ice formations are about 10–50 cm (3.9–19.7 in) high. The darker area between the ice formations and the undisturbed ice further out, is where water seeps up through cracks as the ice moves. The dark band was about 2 m (6.6 ft) wide and made up of black ice with a thin film of water on it. All along the shoreline between the ice formations and on the black ice were large ice crystals, about 2–10 cm (0.79–3.94 in) long, forming patterns. Everything was also covered in hoar frost, making the ice formations look furry.
