Description

Mariposa de 45-55 mm, variable. Las alas anteriores son negras con máculas blancas y amarillentas de varios tamaños. Las posteriores son de color de fondo rojo vivo, con manchas negras, en el caso de la Callimorpha dominula ssp. rossica, son anaranjadas o amarillentas


Tiene predilección por zonas húmedas, frecuentando claros de bosque, bordes de camino y riberas de ríos Vuela de mayo a julio, en una generación al año. Los imagos son diurnos y nocturnos, y liban frecuentemente de las flores. 

La puesta de huevos tiene lugar en grupos.
Las orugas negras con líneas blancuzcas, se alimenta de Urtica, Lonicera, Myosotis, Rubus fruticosus, Lamium, Cynoglossum, Spiraea, Senecio, Genista, Symphitum, Prunus, Populus, Quercus, Ligustrum, etc. Si se las molesta se dejan caer al suelo y se hacen las muertas.
