Description

Tricholoma transmutans (Peck) Sacc.

Image location: Pembroke, Maine, USA

On mossy ground under balsam fir, cedar and birch. Cap up to 12 cm., red brown, margin uplifted, paler and wavy in age. In the button both the cap and stem appear to be densely covered in dark red brown fibrils. The stem has a sharp rooting base. The gills are cream with a reddish edge. The context is white staining red brown where bug eaten and in the stem base when cut. Mealy odor. Unpleasant taste. KOH red brown on cap surface. White spore print.
