Description

Der Bau der Burg wurde 1360 durch den Grafen von Katzenelnbogen begonnen und 1371 beendet. Als das Geschlecht der von Katzenelnbogen 1479 erlosch ging die Burg an den Landgrafen von Hessen. Die Burg wurde in der Folge mehrfach belagert, zerstört und wieder aufgebaut. 1806 schließlich wurde sie auf Befehl Napoleons gesprengt. Ende des 19. JH erwarb der Landrat des Kreises Sankt Goarshausen, Ferdinand Berg die Burg und ließ sie für seine Zwecke wieder auf und umbauen. Rücksicht auf das ehemalige Aussehen der Burg wurde da nicht genommen. Deshalb hat die heutige Anlage auch herzlich wenig mit der mittelalterlichen Anlage zu tun.

Die Burg ist heute im Besitz eine japanischen Investors, der dort in dem Gemäuer ein Hotel errichten wollte. Die Pläne wurden aber nie verwirklicht. Die Burg kann nicht besichtigt werden.
