Members of the U.S. Coast Guard’s (USCG) Atlantic Strike Team monitor the refilling of the Ohmsett test tank with seawater from Sandy Hook Bay. The USCG assisted BSEE and its Ohmsett contractor ARA in refilling the tank after completing an eight-month renovation of the facility. It takes approximately three days of continues pumping to fill the 667-foot tank with 2.6 million gallons of seawater. The renovation occurs every five years and involves draining the tank, dissembling the bridges and metal work, inspecting surfaces and equipment, and repairing, sealing, and painting the concrete floor and walls. Ohmsett – The National Oil Spill Response Research & Renewable Energy Test Facility - provides independent and objective performance testing of full-scale oil spill response equipment and marine renewable energy systems (wave energy conversion devices), and helps improve technologies through research and development. It is the largest outdoor saltwater wave/tow tank facility in North America and is the only facility where full-scale oil spill response equipment testing, research, and training can be conducted in a marine environment with oil under controlled environmental conditions (waves and oil types).
