Description
English: Naval Amphibious Base, Coronado, Calif. (Aug. 24, 2001) -- Master Chief Quartermaster Kobel, Command Master Chief of the Naval Leadership Training Unit, speaks with retired U.S. Navy Lieutenant John W. Finn about an entry in a Chief’s “charge book.” Newly selected Chief Petty Officers carry this book during the weeks prior to official promotion collecting words of wisdom and encouragement from more senior personnel. Lt. Finn is the oldest living Medal of Honor recipient. Admiral Chester Nimitz awarded Lt. Finn the Medal of Honor for his actions at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. While taking heavy enemy machine-gun strafing fire, Lt. Finn manned a .50-caliber machine gun on an exposed area of the flight line at Naval Air Station, Kaneohe Bay. Finn returned fire even after being painfully wounded, leaving his post for medical treatment only when ordered to do so. “The hospital was crowded with injured people so I went back to load up our returning planes that had been on patrol,” said Finn. After supervising the rearming of aircraft, Lt. Finn was taken to the hospital for treatment. U.S. Navy photo by Photographer’s Mate 1st Class Lance Kirk. (RELEASED)
