Gerald D. Roncolato, Commander, Destroyer Squadron Two Six; and Capt. Dana R. Potts, Commander, Carrier Air Wing Seventeen prepare to throw a wreath into the sea as a part of a memorial ceremony in commemoration of the anniversary of the September 11, terrorist attacks.. One year ago, the Washington was ordered to report off the coast of New York City to defend its airspace and the Northeastern coast from further attack. Washington is homeported in Norfolk, Va. and is on a six-month deployment conducting combat missions in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
