English: Washington Navy Yard, D.C. (Jun. 26, 2003) -- Restoration is in work on this 18th century cast iron swivel gun recovered from the Penobscot river near Bangor, Maine, by the Naval Historical Center (NHC) Underwater Archaeology Branch. The gun is believed to be a relic from the Battle of Penobscot, a little known Revolutionary War military engagement. Like most swivel guns manufactured during this time, it resembles a miniaturized version of a larger cannon and features a largely intact wrought-iron yoke and swivel assembly. The gun can pivot in two planes, and functioned as an anti-personnel weapon due to its placement on a vessel’s gunwell. Photo by James Hunter. (RELEASED) |
