Image title | 050120-N-2653P-525 (Jan 20, 2005) Island of Sumatra, Indonesia -- Survivors of the Dec 26th Tsunami rush to greet a visiting U.S. Navy helicopter dropping off humanitarian relief. Despite the devastation, Indonesians like those pictured here remain strong in spirit offering what they can, usually coconuts and meats, in exchange for supplies impressing the Navy Aircrewmen. "It's impressive to see people who have so little still give whatever they have as a way of saying thank you," said Aviation Warfare Systems Operator 1st Class Joseph Sabia, HSL-47, "it shows a lot of character." More than 13,000 U.S. Marines, sailors, airmen, soldiers and Coast Guardsmen with Combined Support Force 536 are working with international militaries and non-governmental organizations to aid the affected people of Thailand, Sri Lanka and Indonesia after a magnitude 9.0 earthquake Dec. 26 triggered devastating tsunamis. Many nations including Thailand, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Australia and the United Kingdom have joined the U.S. here to support Operation Unified Assistance. |
