(Feb. 15, 2005) - Engineman 3rd Class Johnny Thresh, Boatswain’s Mate 2nd Class Sorrells Claiborne and Boatswain’s Mate 2nd Class Pete Johnson, assigned to Port Operations on board Naval Station Everett, position an oil containment boom around ships moored at the a pier. Oil booms are floating barriers that are used in cleaning up oil on the surface of the water. Booms can also be used to divert pollutant to areas where cleanup can be conducted and to protect specific areas such as entrances to harbors and rivers or environmentally or economically sensitive areas.
