English: Atlantic Ocean (Apr. 3, 2005) - A Close-In Weapon System (CIWS) fires during a Pre-Aim Calibration (PAC) fire aboard the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71). CIWS is the self-defense system that combines a 20mm Gatling gun with search and tracking radar to provide surface ships with terminal defense against anti-ship missiles. Roosevelt is currently underway for Tailored Ship Training Availability and Final Evaluation Problem (TSTA/FEP) in the Atlantic Ocean. Image title | Close-in-weapon-system (MK 15 CIWS) tested during Pre Action Aim Calibration (PAC) Fire Sunday. The MK 15 CIWS is a high speed, computer controlled, radar guided, air cooled, pneumatically driven, mechanically pinged, electrically fired, 20mm gattling gun, capable of firing 4500 rounds per minute or 75 bullets a second. The CIWS mount has two radars under the white dome. One for search and one for track. Each CIWS is capable of aquiring (tracking) 60 targets and destroying them in numerical sequence.
