Image title | 050929-N-0856N-913 Karen LaRose (left) and Beverly Gammon, both of St. Bernard Parish, which is located five miles from downtown New Orleans, point out some of the messages of thanks, hope and closure written by fellow displaced citizens on a sheet outside the Milton, Fla., home of Master Gunnery Sgt. Del Crawford and his wife, Penny. Crawford, an aircraft maintenance chief for training at Center for Naval Aviation Technical Training (CNATT) onboard Naval Air Station Pensacola, opened up their home as a retreat for displaced citizens from the St. Bernard Parish in Lousiana, after Hurricane Katrina devastated the Gulf Coast after making landfall Aug. 29, including St. Bernard Parish. The Crawford's home has become much more than shelter to several displaced citizens, it is also an information center where more than 60 citizens from the parish can receive daily updates on housing and jobs, eat a hot meal, clean their laundry and get in touch with their family, friends and neighbors.
