English: El Centro, Calif. (Oct. 4, 2005) - Water is the most vital resource for surviving in the desert. Students in Desert Environmental Survival Training (DEST) use a water procurement method of evaporation to extract drinkable water from saltwater. The saltwater in the hole evaporates leaving the salt at the bottom, but with a plastic cover over the hole, the water has nowhere to go and drops back down into the jar as potable water.
