(June 20, 2007) – Sailors attached to the Navy Support Salvage (NAVSALV) unit work with Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) on simulated oil spill disaster on Lake Michigan. The unit recently provided support to the Spill of National Significance (SONS) exercise. A team of federal, Navy, Coast Guard and state agencies participated in SONS, a 13-state exercise, designed to increase the preparedness of the entire governmental response organization. The SONS exercise was created in response to the catastrophic oil spill of the Exxon Valdez off the coast of Prince William Sounds, Alaska, in 1989.
