English: PACIFIC OCEAN (July 9, 2008) Aerographer's Mate 2nd Class Kristopher Rodriguez, of Baltimore, prepares to release a weather balloon from the fantail of the aircraft carrier USS Kitty Hawk (CV 63). The radiosonde, a radio transmitter attached to the balloon, has sensors that measures meteorological variables such as wind, temperature, dew point and humidity, sending this information to the observing station. Kitty Hawk is participating in Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) 2008. Participants include units from the U.S., Australia, Chile, Japan, the Netherlands, Peru, South Korea, Singapore, and the United Kingdom. USS KITTY HAWK, Pacific Ocean, (July 9, 2008) -Aerographer's Mate 2nd Class Kristopher Rodriguez, 22, of Baltimore, prepares to release a weather balloon on USS Kitty Hawk's (CV 63) fantail July 9. The balloon rose to about 30,000 feet and a 'radiosonde' on it gathered wind, temperature, dew point and humidity readings from the atmosphere. The data was then used to predict the capability and range of the ship's radar systems. Kitty Hawk is participating in the 'Rim of the Pacific' exercise off Hawaii in July with units from Australia, Chile, Japan, the Netherlands, Peru, South Korea, Singapore, the United Kingdom and the U.S. Taking part are 35 ships, six submarines, more than 150 aircraft, and 20,000 Sailors, airmen, Marines, soldiers and Coast Guardsmen. This will be Kitty Hawk's last exercise before returning to the U.S. mainland for decommissioning in early 2009. Kitty Hawk first participated in RIMPAC in 1973. Kitty Hawk will be replaced by USS George Washington (CVN 73) this summer as the Navy's only carrier operating from Japan. U.S. Navy photograph by Mass Communication Specialist 3rd Class Kyle D.
