English: EAST CHINA SEA (Nov. 7, 2008) Aviation Boatswain's Mate (Handling) 3rd Class Apolinar Garcia, from San Diego, communicates with flight-deck control before launching a Republic of Korea (ROK) UH-1 Huey helicopter from the flight deck of the forward-deployed amphibious assault ship USS Essex (LHD 2). The flight operations were a part of this year's Korean Interoperability Training Program (KITP), during which both navies launched and recovered each other's aircrafts in an effort to enhance interoperability. Essex is the lead ship of the only forward-deployed U.S. Expeditionary Strike Group and serves as the flagship for Commander, Task Force 76.
