English: PANAMA CITY, Fla. (Dec 15, 2011) Lt. Denis Colomb, principal investigator with the Navy Experimental Diving Unit, places a whole-cell recording electrode in a holder to imaged by a hyperbaric microscope during a technique called "patch clamping", in which electrodes are attached to a cell membrane so that scientists can monitor, stimulate and record the cell's electrical activity in a pressurized environment. The Office of Naval Research is sponsoring the innovative work designed to explore advances to protect Navy divers working at depths of up to 1,000 feet. (U.S. Navy photo by John F.
