Most Marine Protector class cutters mount a pair of 50 caliber Browning Machine Gun M2 on the port and starboard rails. The machine gun's design is about 100 years old, and crew-served weapons like these aren't any more accurate than they were, 100 years ago.

The Sea Dog and three other vessels, that escort nuclear submarines into and out of harbor mount an accurate, gyrostabilized, remote controlled machine gun, on an elevated pedestal, in the middle of the foredeck.
In this image a tarpaulin either covers the gun, or it covers the mounting where the gun would connect with the ship's electronics.
The modern gyrostabilized, remote control gun sits on a pedestal, presumably so it has a wider field of fire.
