Porträt Johann Christian Barthels (1776-1831), Kopmonist und Hoforganist in Altenburg. Barthel ist als Orgel mit Porträtkopf dargestellt. Neben dem Titel "Barthel" und einem Vers unter dem Bild, ist der linke Rand der Zeichnung mit einem großen und einem kleinen "O" versehen. - nachträglich mit einem Kreuz hinter dem Namen versehen. [Bildunterschrift] Der Orgel es an Wind gebricht/ Hilft ihr der Balgentreter nicht.Biografisches Johann Christian Barthel (1776–1831) war Komponist und Hoforganist in Altenburg. Geboren wurde er in Plauen und erhielt zunächst Unterricht von seinem Vater. Dieser schickte seinen Sohn 1789 an die Thomanerschule nach Leipzig. Schon 1792 diente er als Musiklehrer und Konzertdirektor am Fürstlich Schönburgischen Hof und erhielt später eine Stelle als Musikdirektor und Kantor in Greiz. Als der Altenburger Hoforganist Ehrenfried Christian Traugott Krebs (1753–1804) starb, wählte man Barthel als Nachfolger. (1) In Löbichau gestaltete er mit seinem Spiel zu großen Teilen das musikalische Leben am Musenhof der Herzogin von Kurland. Emilie von Binzer berichtet, dass Barthel in Altenburg auch einen Pferdehandel betrieb und die Strecke zwischen Altenburg und Löbichau nutzte, um die Tiere einzufahren: „Dann pflegte er lachend zu sagen: ‚Der Organist mit vierhundert Talern Gehalt kommt mit zweitausend vor dem Wagen angefahren.’“ (2) „Die Basis unserer musikalischen Uebungen war der Organist Bartel aus Altenburg, ein trefflicher Musiker, Virtuos auf der Orgel; er spielte aber das Klavier, wie alle seines Faches, mit eisernen Fingern; sein geselliger Ton war etwas derb, das that aber in Löbichau nichts, Jeder war dort eben wie er war, wenn nur etwas dahinter steckte.“ (Emilie von Binzer, Drei Sommer in Löbichau, S. 89) 1 Voight, Bernhard Friedrich (Hrsg.): Neuer Nekrolog der Deutschen, 9.
