Summary
editDescriptionVasa (5721927482).jpg | Model of the Vasa; rear view showing the highly decorative stern intended to show the prestige of King Gustav II Adolf. At the Vasa Museum 6/10. Built by hired Dutch shipbuilder Henrik Hybertsson, helped by his brother Arendt Hybertsson de Groote with another Dutchman, Henrik Jacobsson, as chief shipwright. However, King Gustaf II Adolf apparently had the design altered several times to suit his own, somewhat flawed, ideas and insisted on a heavier armamant than the hull could carry safely - hence a very unstable ship resulted (shades of Henry VIII and the Mary Rose) and it's fate was sealed even before it sailed. The captain, Sofring Hansson, had been highly concerned about the ship's stability before it had sailed and had given a demonstration to the Swedish Royal Navy's head of procurement, the Prussian Vice Admiral Klas Fleming; the Vasa had nearly capsised when the crew ran from one side of the deck to the other! But nobody had dared tell the King that "his" ship, which he wanted at sea quickly, was fundamentally unstable. | |||||||||||||
