Summary edit

Description
English: In early June of 1904, Vergene Maltby was five years old and riding on a train to Chicago with her mother. Her mother showed her a newspaper with photos of many political figures, and Vergene declared that Joseph Gurney Cannon looked like a "dear old man".

The next day, the Maltbys went to the site of the Illinois Republican Party's convention, where Vergene recognized Cannon. She then took advantage of her mother's distraction to run into the convention and onto the platform, where she introduced herself to Cannon. He picked her up, sat her on his lap, and allowed her to wield the gavel during the 52nd ballot; "State Senator Smith" subsequently bought her peanuts.
