834 SIMMONS' SPICE MILL OBITUARY

The Late Dr. Vincent C. CHICAGO, July 15.—Dr. Vincent C. Price Price, noted as the inventor of cream tartar baking powder, and founder and successful operator of the Price Baking Powder Co., who died Sunday, July 12, was buried at Waukegan today. The funeral services were held at noon today at the home of a daughter, Mrs. J. F. Hollingworth, 457 Fullerton Parkway, where he died. Dr. Price was in his 82d year, having been born Dec. 11, 1832, at Troy, New York. He received a degree of M.D. in 1891. He established his baking powder business in 1861 and sold it in 1891. lie made a fortune in this business, but was not a millionaire, as many supposed. The general belief is that had he retained the business a few years longer he would have made millions, as have the successors, the Royal Baking Powder Co. He made the discovery which led to the mixing of the first baking powder more than 60 years ago and to his mother ascribes the credit for the idea. Mrs. Price was famous as a biscuit maker but, like many in those days, could not eat these triumphs of her culinary skill because of digestive difficulties. Watching his mother make up a batch of biscuit, Price was seized with the idea which later made his fortune. He was at that time a student in a school of pharmacy and, going to his laboratory, he experimented until he had compounded the powder which eliminated the injurious effects of hot biscuit and made baking a far easier task than it had been. His first output he canvassed from house to house, but it was not long until it had made its own reputation and extensive advertising later on did the rest Other food discoveries are attributed to him, as cornstarch, various kinds of flavoring extracts, vegetable colorings and breakfast foods. For more than 50 years Dr. Price was a resident of Waukegan. He is survived by four children. R. C. Price, the present head of the Price Baking Powder Co.; V. S. Price, Mrs. A. C. Fisher and Mrs. J. F. Hollingworth. Other enterprises founded upon the business ability and scientific knowledge of Dr. Price are the Price Flavoring Extract Co., the Price Cereal Products Co. and the Pan-Confection Co., which, with other companies, has grown into the National Candy Co. The Waukegan Daily Su* said editorially of the deceased: In the death of Dr. V. C. Price, a man is removed who, years ago, was the most prominent and conspicuous figure in Waukegan, a man who did more quiet good than any man of his day in the city, one who never tried to make a show of doing it. He lived a quiet life, spread good cheer in places where few realized it and was recognized as one of the big men of the country. He was the first real advertiser in America ; in fact. he set the pace for newspaper and other advertising which other successful men since have adopted. He was a man who never forgot his friends and his employees loved him greatly, a fact shown by the presence of many men in the employ today of his business who were with him in the early days.
