Description C'est le légendaire colosse de Rhodes, l'une des Sept Merveilles du monde, qui aurait suscité le goût du grandiose chez Auguste Bartholdi lors d'un voyage en Egypte en 1856. L'architecte, épris de grandeur, dessina d'abord une ébauche de statue pour orner l'entrée du canal de Suez. L'idée fut abandonnée pour laisser sa place à la Liberté éclairant le monde.
